Our story

The Wood Family Charitable Trust was founded by Barry and Denise Wood, together with their two sons, Tony and Colin, and their families, to formalise and continue a long-standing commitment to giving back.

In 1980, Barry founded an IT business, Turnkey Computer Technology Ltd, with a focus on supporting local businesses across Scotland. The business expanded over time, with significant growth following the development of a specialist case management system for insolvency practitioners. Built and grown as a family-backed business, Turnkey went on to support clients across the UK and beyond.

In 2024, a majority stake in the business was sold to Bowmark Capital to enable the next phase of international growth. While this marked an important milestone for the company, the family’s commitment to supporting charitable causes remained unchanged.

Having supported a wide range of charities and good causes over many years, the family established the Trust to ensure this support could continue in a structured, thoughtful and lasting way, reflecting the values that have guided them for over 40 years.

  1. 1980

    Turnkey is founded

    Barry starts Turnkey Computer Technology Ltd, supporting local businesses across Scotland.

  2. 1996

    Tony joins the business

    Tony joins Turnkey and goes on to help grow the business across the UK and Australia.

  3. 2024

    A new chapter for the business

    A majority stake in Turnkey is sold to Bowmark Capital to support its international growth.

  4. 2024

    The Trust is established

    The family formalises its giving as The Wood Family Charitable Trust.

  5. 2025

    A five-year commitment to Race Against Dementia

    One of the Trust’s first acts: a five-year pledge to fund three research fellows at Race Against Dementia. Read the news

    More than 1,200 people at the SEC Glasgow helped raise over £175,000 for the Beatson Cancer Charity. Read the news

What we support

We support both well-established charities and smaller organisations where targeted funding can have a meaningful impact.

Health and research

Initiatives accelerating research and care, and causes that improve health, wellbeing and quality of life.

Supported: Race Against Dementia — a five-year pledge funding three research fellows.

Cancer support

Organisations tackling serious illness and long-term conditions, and work supporting patients and their families.

Supported: The Beatson Cancer Charity, Maggie’s.

Education and opportunity

Education and opportunity in underserved communities, in the UK and further afield.

Supported: Ruth Memorial Orphanage School in Uganda, since 2008.

Wildlife and the environment

Protecting wildlife and preserving habitats through conservation and environmental charities.

Trustees and governance

The Trust is overseen by its trustees, who are responsible for ensuring it is well governed and that all grants and donations align with its charitable purposes. We review enquiries and funding decisions carefully and fairly, and monitor support in a practical, proportionate way.

For administrative matters, the Trust is supported by professional advisers as appropriate.

Matching grants: The trustees are keen supporters of matching funding. If a group is fundraising for a cause, we’re often pleased to match what they raise, pound for pound.

A paperless charity: We run the Trust digitally wherever possible, using electronic systems and online communication. Grant applications can only be made through this website or by email; see how to apply.
